When I see a tool like this, I think of the possible history of its use. I don't actually know what it might be, however I have seen these in action, I have used them myself, and the craftsman I have known who have these in their collection love to talk about what it was like when this was their only option.
Some still use tools similar to this one, however the version they use is updated, and it is a source of pride that they have to skill to use such a tool. I have given these a spin myself, and I don't have the patience of the coordination to make use of one properly.
The next best option for me is to make it into a piece of art. -YoPedro
